Grooveshark Sessions @The Fest: Larry & His Flask

Last Halloween, we had the opportunity to meet & mingle with several artists during the Fest 9 and our first annual “Grooveshark Sessions”. Around 17 artists met up with us at Medusa Studios to record one live, acoustic track and an interview to be exclusively released via Grooveshark. After months of unwinding, editing, mixing, mastering, etc. - the tracks and interviews are here!

Next in the series is Larry and His Flask, an amazing DIY alt-country/punk group from Portland, OR. These guys ended up leaving a pretty strong imprint on Fest goers, playing over 4 shows in the course of 3 days (the most infamous being in a hotel lobby) and partying relentlessly. Additionally, they impressed me quite a bit - after seeing their ridiculously energetic live show, spending hours with them in the studio, then finding that my roommate (bassist for Greenland is Melting) had asked them to stay at our house over the weekend - we got quite cozy. Well, the long awaited interview is finally here - check it!

Can you tell me the name of the track you just recorded, and the story behind it?

The track that we just recorded is called “No Life”. It’s an unreleased track. We’ve been playing it for a while live, but we haven’t really gotten around to recording it.

Do you guys have an album recorded?

We don’t have a full album recorded. Don’t get us wrong - we’ve got the tunes! We just don’t have the money to record them. We’re unsigned and we don’t have any money except enough for us to get down the road.

Is this the first time you played the Fest? How did you hear about it?

Yup! I first heard about it from Broadway Calls, our buddies, and then just kept hearing about it - tons of bands, tons of friends - I’ve never heard a bad word about it. So many people mentioned it over the years just saying - you have to go!!

Have you had any crazy experiences so far?

Pool party!! We played on the roof of the Holiday Inn - we were the first band to play the Fest. Outside, the sun was beating down, people were handing us PBRs instead of water… Then we played again that night. Double header!

Did you guys play in Oregon a lot before you started touring, or have you mostly strayed away from it?

We’re relatively disconnected from our scene at home. We used to play a lot locally, but we just wanted to get out as soon as we got off our feet. When we were kids, we wanted to just get the hell out of our hometown. We’d call it “tour,” then just go on vacation for five weeks. [Laughing] I mean, the only way to really do what we do – to spread the gospel of the Flask – is to tour constantly. Especially because we don’t have an album recorded.

Collective favorite food?

Pizza probably gets consumed more than anything. It’s not necessarily our favorite, but statistically we’ve probably consumed the most pizza.

It’s not the favorite though… Mexican probably. Thai food also.

Can you guys name a city where you’ve had the best food?

Anywhere where people have cooked us awesome food. One of the best meals I feel like we’ve ever had was in Newport Beach. This world-renowned chef who cooks for like, the King and Queen of Morocco, and taught Wolf Gang Puck how to cook….

It’s this really really rich neighborhood that our friend live in who was neighbors to this guy. He was like, “Come over, I’ll cook for you.” Lobster, olives that he had been soaking for years, Mediterranean style… it was amazing.

We’re actually featured in a cook book. It’s music and food mixed together, featuring interviews with bands on the road and comes with a mix CD of those bands.

Have any of you guys used Grooveshark prior to this?

Oh yeah. All the time! It’s crazy – I just found out about it a few months ago. It’s so fucking cool that we got to do this.
