One of our new favorite bands that we’ve been working with lately goes by the name We Are Augustines. This Brooklyn based band is the product of Billy McCarthy and Eric Sanderson, who started the project in 2009. Their new album, Rise Ye Sunken Ships, debuted yesterday and is available for purchase on iTunes as well as for streaming on Grooveshark.

The 12-track album is an incredibly moving journey of love, loss, redemption and triumph; with tones reminiscent of some of the more anguished moments in The National’s “Boxer”. The intriguing music video for the single “Chapel Song” helps to introduce their story, and was enough to hook us in to the rest of the album. I highly recommend reading their full story from the band’s website to really get a feel of how the music was born; it’s truly an impressive tale.

Keep up with We Are Augustines:

Suffice it to say, the single is extraordinary and over here at Grooveshark we have not stopped listening. We’ve been lucky enough to hear some sneak peeks of the album, and are extremely excited for it. These guys put a lot of passion into their music and it really manifests in this song.

Austin-based Grooveshark Artists Quiet Company have announced that their album, We Are Where We All Belong, will be released on October 4. The first single off of the album is due out in early August.

Check out the music video for the track, “Fear & Fallacy, Sitting in a Tree” :

Quiet Company - Fear and Fallacy, Sitting in a Tree - Official Music Video from Digital Shakedown on Vimeo.

We Are Where We All Belong represents Quiet Company’s return to form, featuring pop hooks, grinding guitars and vocal harmonies. Lyrically, the album chronicles the range of emotions that a person might experience in a post-breakup period: tones of sadness, resentment, and self-doubt are intermixed with the feelings of joy and freedom that come from the realization that one has made the right decision.

“It is easily the most personal thing that I have ever written,” said lead singer Taylor Muse. “It is, essentially, a break up record, only the romance that’s ending was between myself and religion.”

As you may know, we recently announced a partnership with Quiet Company’s label, Rocket Science, to champion forward thinking artists like the band. Check ‘em out and mark your calendars for October 4th!

likezebra:

Tunipop is a new way for bands to get their merch into all the different digital music services out there—just like Grooveshark.

They even put together a little video to give you an idea of how it works.

We love the idea of fans of bands seeing merch wherever they find music online, and it’s exactly the kind of cool offering to artists that we at Grooveshark love. Check ‘em out!

Grooveshark: Grooveshark Presents: The SXSW Sessions!

Grooveshark: Grooveshark Presents: The SXSW Sessions!:
grooveshark:

Happy Monday, Grooveworld! We’re happy to announce the official release of our first full Grooveshark Session. Live from Austin, Texas, here’s Grooveshark Sessions: SXSW 2011!

As some of you know, we rolled into South by Southwest this year in a giant shrink-wrapped bus ready to make…

Grooveshark Sessions @The Fest: Greenland is Melting

Last Halloween, we had the opportunity to meet & mingle with several artists during the Fest 9 and our first annual “Grooveshark Sessions”. Around 17 artists met up with us at Medusa Studios to record one live, acoustic track and an interview to be exclusively released via Grooveshark. After months of unwinding, editing, mixing, mastering, etc. - the tracks and interviews are here!

Next is Greenland is Melting, a folk/bluegrass/punk group are similar to ours here in Gainesville, FL. I’ve been going to their shows for years now, and was lucky enough to have a first-hand peak at the outstanding growth they’ve achieved over the years through pure hard work and dedication. It was truly a pleasure inviting them to participate in this opportunity, and not just from a mom-watching-your-kid-grow-up perspective. Check out my interview below with Shaun, Karl and Will:

I’m here with Greenland is Melting, a local Gainesville band signed to Paper + Plastick. They just wrapped up their recording for the Grooveshark Fest Sessions – so what song did you guys record?

K: “The Last Song” Is this a technically ‘unreleased’ song?

S: Yeah! You guys have been playing it live for a while though, right?

S: It was on our first release a long time ago.

K: We redid it recently and it’s coming out on a split EP with Jon Gaunt.

Is this the first time you guys have played the Fest?

K: Actually, yeah, it is.

S: We usually play a lot of house shows during the Fest, but that’s about it. It’s not really the same.

Have you had any crazy experience from this year’s Fest?

W: I was surprised how little times I was asked for burrito money. I was all prepped – I emptied my wallet on purpose so when the crusties asked me for money, I couldn’t offer them any. But it’s been not that bad so far! I think since last years whole police riot thing, people are a little on edge. But as far as events go, I think my favorite story – I was walking out of 8 Seconds and there was this girl just sitting on the street, tears streaming down her face, and blood on her arms for some reason.

S: That was your favorite story?!

W: Well it’s not my favorite, that’s just my ‘Fest’ experience so far. It was 4 in the afternoon, Cobra Skulls just played… I hope she feels better.

Have you guys been doing a lot of touring lately, or have you mostly been at home?

W: Right now we’re all juggling school, work and band; so we’ve done a lot of weekend tours or short 5-day tours. Coming up next year we’re going to be hitting the road for extended periods of time.

S: As long as we can stay on the road, we’ll be on the road.

I know you guys have been playing in Gainesville for a few years now. Have you noticed a change in the scene at all, especially relating to the upsurge in alt country music?

S: I think that it was always there, but it was just hard to find. But now, people are more accepting of it and they’re seeking it out. That’s the big difference.

W: It’s kind of just like the natural evolution from the folk punk scene. We just threw our own twang on it.

What’s your favorite venue to play in Gainesville?

S: Atlantic. Common Grounds.

W: My bass always sounds the best at Common Grounds… but really, all over Gainesville. You play small venues small shows for 15 people who are so close they’re breathing on you (which is amazing), and then you play Common Grounds and there’s that big stage which is weird but great, and all of the sound guys are so talented.

Collective favorite food?

Taco Bell

Favorite city to play in?

W: Asheville’s been pretty good to us. Always a good time.

S: I actually like Chapel Hill more than Ashville

W: Well, I think we can agree that North Carolina has always been a good time.

Well I think that’s about it. Thank you guys so much for coming in – do you have any other questions or comments?

K: No, I just wanted to say thank you to Grooveshark!

W: Yes thank you Grooveshark!

S: We had a great time.

Next on our list is the Riot Before, a band that’s generally considered a staple at The Fest. Appropriately so, the stories they shared in this interview, their infection with the “treacherous rhythms of rock and roll”, and their we’ll-show-you-how-to-party attitude affirms their presence. And on top of all that, they’re insanely nice dudes with a thoughtful, eloquent, and carefully constructed message to share. Check out their interview below:

We’re here once again at Medusa Studios for the Grooveshark Fest Sessions. We’re with Brett Adams from the Riot Before – he just played an amazing song from their new album that just came out on Paper + Plastick. Tell us about the new album and the process of putting it together.

The album came together I guess 2 years ago, and actually conceptually came together when I was sitting around in my backyard re-reading The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. I came across this line in the chapter called Rebellion: “one can hardly live under rebellion, and I want to live.” I immediately read that line and was like: that’s going to be the name of the record. So for the next 8 months, I just sat down and thought about what that meant to me. Lyrically, the record comes from those themes of the inadequacies of a lifestyle built on rebellion, but more on the latter half of “I want to live” – what does it mean to live fully, what are the things that are required for that? Does it mean that you’re just sitting around saying “no” to things all of the time, which is basically what rebellion is? That was the concept behind the record. Musically, it was pretty awesome because it was the first time I feel like we really worked together as a band on the songs, and everybody’s ideas were in there. And then we recorded with J. Robbins, which was incredible.

Very cool! Which studio did you do that in?

Magpie Studios in Baltimore, MD. I was in Baltimore for two weeks, which is beautiful! It looks like the Wire… everywhere.

So, do you guys call Richmond home?

Yeah, we all live in Richmond. None of us are actually from Richmond, but we’ve all lived there. I’ve been in Richmond for 5½ years, everybody else a little bit longer. What’s it like being a band out of Richmond? Richmond is a great place to be a band in, especially if you want to tour. It’s a pretty cheap town still, I mean depending on where you live, and it’s in the center of the East coast next to a whole lot of cities. So if you’re going to be touring, you can pay your rent while your gone and you have short drives everywhere. And I really, really like it. Playing locally is a little bit of a struggle sometimes. Everybody I know is in a band, and everybody tours; so when they’re home from tour there’s not this big sense of community and going to shows together. You just saw 60+ shows and would rather just drink at the bar with your friends. And I’m totally guilty of the same thing. It’s almost a place where bands go so they don’t have to watch bands, and then they go play shows elsewhere. It’s a great city though – I love living there.

So, we’re on day 2 of Fest now. You played your show – yesterday? How was it?

Pretty much the best show we’ve ever played. Which I can imagine – I’ve seen you guys live before at 1982 and it pretty much knocked my socks off. Aside from having a great show, of your Fest experiences so far – anything stick out? You know, we’ve been touring for almost 5 years now. You meet everybody on the road touring, and then you never see them again. So for us, the Fest is a punk rock reunion. I was joking earlier about how many dudes I’m going to hug this weekend. It’s just my weekend of hugging dudes - I’m probably going to hug about 200 dudes. [laughs] It’s just all these people you never see and you’re so excited to see again. So you know, last night at the hotel we partied in a hallway until 4AM just catching up with all these guys we never really see – it was a ton of fun.

One Fest experience I did want to revisit was that great story you told me earlier involving urinals on the fly?

I won’t name names, but I met up with a friend of mine while he was sitting at the pool hungover. He was telling me that last night when he was hammered watching Defeater, it was so crowded but he had to piss so badly. But, he didn’t really care because he was hammered…. So he just walked up to the bar, nestled right up against it, unzipped his fly, stood there, and just relieved himself while Defeater was playing. He possibly could have ordered a drink while peeing under the bar. And people were shoulder to shoulder packed – it was scary in there. So uh, that’s the Fest, I guess?

So for the listeners that have not been, this is what you have to look forward to! Yeah, possibly getting peed on! Just don’t stand near the bar. That’s the lesson to learn there. Or, if you have to pee – stand near the bar. Either way.

Good lesson. Thank you for coming in, Brett – we had a great time! Everyone be sure to check out their new album Rebellion on Paper + Plastick!

Grooveshark Sessions @The Fest: Big Eyes

Last Halloween, we had the opportunity to meet & mingle with several artists during the Fest 9 and our first annual “Grooveshark Sessions”. Around 17 artists met up with us at Medusa Studios to record one live, acoustic track and an interview to be exclusively released via Grooveshark. After months of unwinding, editing, mixing, mastering, etc. - the tracks and interviews are here!

Up next is Big Eyes, a female-fronted garage group from Brooklyn or New Brunswick - depending on where there’s space for them to practice (in true garage fashion). Since many of us here at Groovesark are huge garage fans, it only felt appropriate to rope in the talented Big Eyes for a session. Check out the resulting interview and track recorded below:

Where are you guys from?

Kaitlyn: We’re from New York, but I’m from New Jersey. We kind of switch where we’re based out of depending on who’s living at a house with a practice space.

CJ: We’ve kind of claimed Brooklyn as a middle ground because we started the band there and have been practicing there for a long time.

So that’s kind of your scene?

CJ: Yeah - Brooklyn and New Brunswick, NJ

Same as The Measure (SA)!

CJ: Yeah!

Are you guys mostly on the road or do you play a lot of shows in Brooklyn?

K: We definitely play a lot of local stuff. CJ goes to school and works full time, and me and Mark are both… hanging out full time. Me and Mark have nothing to do, and CJ has everything to do. It’s a combination. At least every couple of months we’re out for a little bit.

What’s your favorite city to play in?

M: I really like Oakland, but I think I just really like it because there’s so many bands and it’s a really grimy place.

CJ: I tend to like smaller places than bigger cities. They’re just a little more warm. My favorite city is Appleton, WI. I really, really love it there. It’s like living in The Wonder Years, the TV show.

Aw nice! Does it have a good music scene?

CJ: Well, all the bands there are awesome – they have great punk bands and great hardcore bands and kind of like, weird –

K: There’s a lot of crust, and then also a lot of power pop.

Any bands from Appleton come to mind for the people listening to this to check out?

K:Tenement.

CJ: Yeah, Tenement and Bored Straight -

Mark: Bored Straight!

CJ: And Technicolor Teeth. We played with those bands last summer, and I just did a show with Bored Straight in New Jersey. They’re all really awesome.

How many times have you guys played the Fest?

K: This is our first year actually – we’ve only been a band for about 10 months.

CJ: Our first band practice was in the hotel room at last years Fest! So this is kind of like the one-year anniversary of our band, almost.

That’s Fest for you.

G: We’ve all played at the Fest before in other bands, though. My old bands are called Chikie and Used Kids.

M: I played the Fest with a band called ANS, and I also play in a hardcore band called Seasick, and another band called Kicking Spit.

CJ: I was in Used Kids.

Well check those out everybody! I think that’s all we have time for – thanks for participating in the Gainesville Fest Sessions!

Grooveshark Sessions @The Fest: Carpenter

Last Halloween, we had the opportunity to meet & mingle with several artists during the Fest 9 and our first annual “Grooveshark Sessions”. Around 17 artists met up with us at Medusa Studios to record one live, acoustic track and an interview to be exclusively released via Grooveshark. After months of unwinding, editing, mixing, mastering, etc. - the tracks and interviews are here!

Next is Carpenter, an indie/punk/rock foursome from Vancouver. The following interview was conducted with Daniel Sioui, who sings vocals and plays “out of tune guitar” (his words, not mine). Carpenter’s interview and sessions was especially amusing considering how hungover the group was from the night before. Luckily, we had plenty of PBR and whiskey in stock to liven the group up!

Is this the first time you’ve played the Fest?

This is actually our second year playing the Fest, but I think the partying has definitely increased this year. I actually went to a show in a hotel room last night – Fest is amazing. It’s so crazy how international it’s become – literally every corner of the Earth is coming here for this one weekend to celebrate.

Can you name me a favorite city to play in?

We have a few, but as far as the US is concerned - Philadelphia has sort of become our “adopted” city. We had so many friends there and the city really seems to have embraced our music. We know so many amazing bands from there too.

Do you guys play a lot of shows in Vancouver still?

Yeah! We play really often. A week after we get back we’re doing this thing called the Bro Show – it’s us, Living with Lions, and a few other bands. It’s literally just a party – our little Fest in Vancouver for just this one night.

How’s the scene in Vancouver?

It’s great. It literally feels like we have a real community. It seems like a lot of cities are lacking that – bands don’t really support each other and it seems way more competitive. In Vancouver, we’re really all friends and really supportive of each other. We do whatever we can to spread the word.

Can you name any bands you’re friends with in Vancouver that you would recommend our readers to check out?

Definitely Living with Lions – who are sort of already well known – but they’re really great friends of ours. There’s another band called In Bear Country that are great. There are so many bands just starting that don’t even have names yet, but I know they’ll be good because all of the members have been in awesome projects before. It’s great to see Vancouver bands getting recognition again.

It’s funny – we used to have this thing where they had to play a certain percentage of Canadian content on the radio to support the arts. At one point, it was kind of hard for us to fill it with good, local bands. But now, more than half the bands I listen to are Canadian, they’re all over the radio, and bands like Arcade Fire are selling out huge arenas. It’s so crazy. It’s nice to see Canadian bands doing so well.

Any questions for us?

No – I just want to say just thanks so much for having us! It was really fun. Fest is so awesome – like you said, it’s great that there’s so many people here doing stuff to spread the word and get good music out there. There’s a lot of good music to be found.

I’ve probably seen about 80 bands play at the Fest, and they’re all good bands. Which is hard to do – there’s a lot of shitty bands out there. [laughs]

Do you have an album coming out on P+P anytime soon?

Yeah! We have a new album called Sea to Sky, it’s available on CD now, at goldstockrecords.com, and on Paper + Plastick’s website.

JUST RELEASED: Check out this video of Fitz & the Tantrums...

JUST RELEASED: Check out this video of Fitz & the Tantrums performing a live, “acoustic” version of their popular single, “MoneyGrabber”! Look out for more Sessions with other up-and-coming artists, as well as an interview with Fitz and co., appearing on Grooveshark next week!!
